Remme vs. State and City

We must never forget our blessings.  Life can and often will take a dramatic turn with no warning.  One minute you’re an accomplished cyclist, devoted father and husband, the next minute you can’t feel your legs, your arms don’t work. You can no longer provide for your family.  Your spouse now becomes your nurse.

The State of Washington and the City of Seattle created a “trap” for cyclists.  A defect in a sidewalk that government, through neglect, allowed to worsen.

What was to be a nice ride on a nice May day, found Lan Remme captured in the government’s trap.

When he encountered the defect, Lan flipped over his handlebars and broke his neck.  In an instant, Lan went from avid bike rider to wheelchair-bound in an instant, through no fault of his own.

Through all of the twists and turns since he found himself laying out on the sidewalk, unable to move, paralyzed, Lan has remained and continues to remain positive.  He’s an inspiration to anyone who has suddenly encountered life-altering adversity.

Result

The City of Seattle and the State of Washington settled several weeks before the trial. The City agreed to pay $2.5 million and the State agreed to pay $1.5 million.

The forward momentum stopped when Lan’s bike wheel got caught in the sidewalk hazard, sending him over his handlebars and slamming him head first onto the cement.
